Security window film thickness ranges from 4 Mils to as much as 15 mils in thickness.
Security window film consists of one or more layers of polyester film, laminated together with special adhesives.
Thicker films are usually constructed by laminating multiple layers of thinner film together. In general, the thicker the film is, the stronger it is.
As the thickness of the film increases, the degree of break strength, tear strength, and puncture strength also increases.
Thicker film usually costs more due to the greater amount of materials needed and the additional manufacturing time required.
For most security applications, 8 Mil to 10 Mil thickness film is commonly used.
Thinner films are often used in lower threat environments or when the primary reason for installing the film is for tinting or solar protection.
Thicker films are often used in higher threat environments where additional security protection is needed.
-4 Mil to 7 Mil thickness is the entry level protection commonly used for solar protection and to reduce the risk of lighter objects from coming through your windows during events such as hurricanes.
-8 Mil to 10 Mil thickness comes with enough strength to protect against burglars, quick break-ins, and enough to withstand most objects thrown at the window such as rocks and other hand held objects.
-10 Mil to 14 Mil + are heavy duty security tint that usually are made for bomb blasts and for commercial business that typically hold expensive valuables such as jewelry and expensive equipment.
Security window film ranges in price from as low at $5.50 per square foot to as high as $16 per square foot for a professional installation.
The way prices work for a professional security window film installer is they usually charge about $1.50 more than the mil thickness of the film.
For example, if you want 8 Mil security tint installed, it will cost around $9.50 per square foot. If you were to want a 4 Mil security tint installed, it will cost around $5.50 per square foot.
The thicker the film the more expensive it will cost per square foot.
In addition to the cost per square foot of the window tint, for extra security a specific caulking is applied around the edge of the window film to secure it to the actual frame of the window itself.
This usually cost about $1-$2 per linear square foot of the window. (The specific caulking is called dow corning 995)
However, due to the extremely difficult process of installing security film, some companies may charge more due to the face that it takes more time and effort to professionally install the film to the glass.
Installing security window tint takes more effort and patience then almost any other film.
Usually for the window tint to completely dry and stick on the window it will take between 2-3 weeks depending on the thickness you decide for your project.
When properly applied, security window film can provide the following benefits:
• Security window film can increase the strength of the window, which can delay or prevent entry by a burglar.
This delay can be a great deterrent from a burglar getting inside because while it will normally take 20 secs to get through a window, with security window film it can increase that to up to 3 minutes.
• Security window film can reduce injuries caused by flying glass when the window is shattered. This could occur because of an accident, an act of vandalism, a bomb blast, or a natural disaster such as hurricanes.
• Certain types of security window film can provide benefits not directly related to security. These can include tinting of the window, reduction of the heat passing through the glass, and the reduction of damages caused by the sun's ultraviolet rays to help protect your furniture inside and the floors over time.
